Once you’ve reserved your new Space home, there are a number of things you should do in advance that makes the moving process much easier. With a lot to already remember, it’s a good idea to prepare early, which is why we’ve put 9 easy things to organise before moving home!
1. Mail redirection
Around a month or two before moving in, you should change your address at your workplace, school/university and doctors so by the time you move in, all your mail is redirected to your new address. You don’t want to miss any important documents being sent to your old address!
You can redirect your mail to any UK addresses with the Royal Mail.
2. Change or cancel your subscription billing address
Make sure you change your address for your subscriptions like Netflix, Spotify and Audible. Forgetting to change them could cause you hassle in the future, so its best to update your address before move in day so you don’t have to worry about it once you’ve moved in.
Also, if you have any local subscriptions like newspapers or magazines, be sure to cancel them before moving too.
3. Tell your bank, building societies & insurance companies
It’s important to inform your bank/s, building societies and insurance companies about your move and update your address on their records.
Keeping them up to date with them means if you receive a financial document, it will arrive on your doorstep, not a stranger’s.
4. Change your car details
If you own a car, keeping your address up to date with the relevant companies is really important, and could mean you avoid being fined in the future.
You can update your driving licence on the Government website or via post. It is completely free to do so, but if you don’t update your details you could be fined.
Making sure your car insurance company knows your new address is really important. The policy pricing is based on your location, so the price of your insurance could change when you move.

To inform the DVLA that you’ve changed address, head to the Government website. It won’t cost you to change your details, but if you fail to do so, you could be fined up to £1000. So it’s best to update them a couple of weeks before you move, so they can update it on their records.
5. Update your details on the electoral roll
Changing your address on the electoral roll is another thing to remember when you move to a new property.
Plus, keeping the electoral roll up to date can contribute towards improving your credit score
6. Inform your insurance companies
Everywhere you have insurance will need to know about your change of address. Mobile, home, pet, life, health & dental insurance will all need to be made aware.
With lots of companies to remember to tell, we'd reccomend writing out a list and ticking them off once you've informed them. That way, you won't forget anyone!
7. Find a removals company
On your moving day, you’ll most likely need the helping hands of a removal company to help shift all your belongings from your current property, to your new one.
It’s a good idea to search online for local removal companies with good reviews. Make sure you book a trustworthy company so you don’t worry about them not showing.
Often, removals companies will charge a premium rate during busy times like bank holidays, so if you’re able to schedule move in day for a mid-week day, that might work out cheaper for you!
8. Store important documents safely and securely
Whilst in the process of buying a new home, you’ll receive a range of documents from us here at Space Homes, solicitors, Help to Buy (if you use it), and a range of important documents. It’s advised to keep these all in a safe and secure place that you remember. Then, if in the future you need to refer to them, you know where they are and you don’t have to worry that you’ve lost anything important.
9. Set a countdown to move in day!
