A little local history at Spofforth Castle…

The ruins of Spofforth Castle are one of North Yorkshire’s best-kept secrets and a real off-the-beaten-path treat. Tucked away in plain sight in the quiet village of Spofforth, it would be very easy to miss out on this fascinating slice of English history. In the heart of the village, Spofforth Castle is the ruined medieval residence of William de Percy which dates back to 1067. It has a rich and distinguished history having played its part in the War of the Roses and the Civil War but maybe most notably, Spofforth Castle is reputed to be the place at which the Magna Carta was drawn up in 1215. The Ministry of Works who took responsibility for the castle in 1925 described it as more of a “fortified manor house” than an actual castle but it is owned by English Heritage and is free to visit daily.

Their importance lies in their decoration, elaboration and rarity.
